Introduction: What is the Primary Spine Care Physician Initiative? By John Murray, WCA Executive Director Are the chiropractors of Wisconsin prepared to seriously discuss expanding their scope of practice? We will find out soon enough. With over 1,200 members, the WCA represents DCs from all across the chiropractic practice and philosophy spectrum. This is the big tent chiropractic association, and it respects the opinions of all members in their methods and viewpoints. With this in mind, the WCA Board of Directors - at a special meeting on August 7, 2014-voted unanimously to release a white paper outlining the Primary Spine Care Physician initiative to WCA members and the public. The paper was produced with great thought and vigorous discussion. The board of directors believes that the WCA membership deserves the opportunity to weigh in on the issue of scope expansion. It also feels a diligently researched and thought provoking paper outlining a compelling case for the future of chiropractic was the best way to stimulate that discussion. It is worth noting that the board voted to release it for comment and discussion. This is important because while members of the board may feel strongly that the Primary Spine Care Physician idea is the right direction for this association, they are being respectful of membership opinion and offering the proposal to members for their thoughtful consideration before making it an official policy position. This is the right way to engage our members in one of the most important discussions in the history of our association. Regardless of your practice model or chiropractic philosophy, I ask you to take the time to read the full white paper and the associated education program. Give it some critical thought and analysis. There will be many more conversations about this topic before the year is over. This is a discussion about more than the chiropractic scope of practice in Wisconsin-it is about the future of the profession to which you have dedicated your life.
