ON THE LABRADOR My grandfather had a schooner, he took down to the Labrador, he went down there every summer, to bring back fish for sure. My mother told me stories, about how lonesome they would be, and I remember he sent a telegram, with a birthday wish for me. The women all would worry, about the safety of their men, and about the work they had to do, till the men got back again. I remember Grandma watching out, from the hill above the bay, ‘cause she always got the feeling, to expected them home that day. Now that was many years ago, in Salvage, Newfoundland, but now, when men go away to work, they go up to the big Main-Land. ~Rose Oldford Pestrue~
