OP-ED: Barre City Republican Cmte calls on mayors to support Second Amendment/Article 16 of VT Constitution Gun owners and supporters of gun owners, Second Amendment rights, Article 16 of the Vermont State Constitution as well as the Sportsman’s Bill of Rights – whether you hunt or not – need to be in attendance on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Burlington City Hall, Contois Auditorium from 6:00-8:30 PM for GunSense VT’s forum called, “Reducing Gun Violence in Vermont.” There will be a panel of so-called experts who will be reporting on how dangerous and violent Vermont is because we have some of the most liberal gun laws in the country. It sounds strange, doesn’t it? That’s because it is. Why is this important to you? Because this group is chipping away little by little at our Second Amendment rights which “Shall not be infringed” and have been working with Mayors Against Illegal Guns to do so. These mayors are from the cities of Barre, Rutland, Montpelier and Burlington. Reasonable Vermont citizenry understands that while there are certainly reports of gun violence in Vermont we know that is a minority of all reporting. We also know we are one of the safest states in the Union. Despite all this, said gun violence is being applied to all citizens of Vermont in terms of a push for “Commonsense, Common-Ground Improvements for State Gun Laws.” GunSense VT is joined in their efforts not only by Mayors Against Illegal Guns but by Sisters of Mercy and the Vermont Interfaith Action group among other groups. They were the only group that the Burlington City Council’s Charter Change Committee would speak with as they worked toward changing their charter making laws about guns in the City of Burlington. Their council vote was a strategic move on behalf of GunSense VT to set up the legislature to vote for an illegal law and remove an obstacle that would then allow Mayors Against Illegal Guns to impose gun restrictions in Barre City, Montpelier, Rutland and allow Burlington’s charter change to stand. All of this action was done in direct opposition to standing law under the Sportsman Bill of Rights. Why? The opposition, the fear, the threat is that if this passes in Burlington, god-forbid other Vermont towns might follow suit. And that is not a fear, from my perspective that is a hope. - Burlington City Councilor Norman Blais. GunSense VT is using fear-mongering and scare tactics in addition to data as old as 2002 and not even about Vermont to tell Vermonters that those of you who own guns for whatever reason that is your own we need to “Close the Gaps in Current Law.” They are using emotion and anecdotal stories to make a case to solve a problem that isn’t even there. GunSense VT is a subset of Moms Demand Action for GunSense in America, which is a subset of Michael Bloombergs Mayors Against Illegal Guns which was formed to promote gun control after the horrific Sandy Hook, CT shootings. We call on the Mayors of Barre City, Burlington, Rutland and Montpelier to step down from their participation in Mayors Against Illegal Guns. We also call on all other mayors in the state of Vermont to step up and support the Second Amendment and Article 16 rights of all law-abiding Vermonters. This isn’t the time to sit back and expect the NRA or Gun Owners of VT or Gun Owners of America to speak for you because you’ve got a paid membership. This is YOUR right GunSense VT and Mayors Against Illegal Guns are trying to usurp through extremist activism. It is your duty as an American to ensure that your Second Amendment Rights are upheld. Submitted on behalf of the Barre City Republican Committee including, but not limited to: Jackie Barnett, Chair Michael Boutin, Vice Chair Kristin Sohlstrom, Treasurer John Gilligan, Assistant Treasurer John Santorello, Former Chair Ed Riso, Former Chair Liz Gilligan Anne Valliere Lynn Averill
