OPPORTUNITES pour info et transmission Call for researchers on freedom of expression in Africa The Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa, Commissioner Pansy Tlakula, in March 2012, embarked on a campaign aimed at the decriminalisation of laws which limit freedom of expression in Africa. This project is being managed by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. A major component of this campaign is a continent-wide research, which seeks to provide a solid evidence base of the effect of these laws on freedom of expression on the continent. We are thus seeking persons with good research and writing skills and extensive experience on the subject matter, to undertake a combination of desk top reviews and interviews on the use and impact of these laws in a number of countries in Africa. Countries: Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Liberia, Lesotho, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Required expertise Researchers must have specialised knowledge of the situation of freedom of expression in the particular country and should ideally be resident in that country. Applicants must have excellent writing and analytical skills in English/French language, as demonstrated by their research works and publications. Supporting documents for application: ● Letter of interest, stating why you are interested in the research and highlighting relevant qualifications; also indicate which country you are applying for, and provide a motivation why you are best suited to conduct research in that particular country; ● A reasonably detailed CV that includes a list of published works and highlights experience on freedom of expression issues; ● Two recent writing samples, one of which should ideally be a published work. Remuneration: Researchers will receive remuneration up to a maximum of 3,000 US Dollars, depending on experience and qualifications. Half of the sum is payable on receipt of an acceptable first draft of the work. Final payment will be made once subsequent queries and amendments have, to the satisfaction of the Project steering Committee, been incorporated into a final report. All researchers will be required to attend a preliminary meeting with the project steering committee prior to the commencement of the research, to discuss in detail the research template. Application deadline: 21 June 2013 Deadline for submission of first draft: 31 August 2013 Applications should be sent to: [email protected]
