ORGANIC EXPENSIVE JUICE DRINKS REVISITED BY POPULAR DEMAND! So a while back I profiled one juice drink while I was at whole foods shopping for groceries. It was the Naked brand juice drink as it had only organic juices and all these vitamins and phytonutrients and blah blah... However it had enough sugar in one serving to equal a full size twix bar and never mind the bottle has on average 2.5 servings. Keep in mind most people from experience drink the entire bottle so they essentially have maxed out their sugar intake for the day by breakfast! Ok I am rambling so I will get back on point, recently i have been travelling quite a bit and staying with family and it is funny because when I come to my relatives house they are always afraid I will critique their eating habits but the truth is they start critiquing themselves without me saying a word....I dont try to make people feel guilty about food choices but deep down they know that what they are eating is probably not the best of choices for them or their kids. So my relatives and friends who I stay with tell me this everytime when they tell me what they eat(mind you I didnt ask as they feel the need to purge, I am on vacation not there to consult!). They say: We buy only organic juice and only the good stuff for us and the kids so you(being me) would be happy with that; well the truth more often than not is their choice in juice and consumption quantity of these expensive juice drinks is the biggest problem! Lets add a little perspective: According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are: Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons). Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons). Also lets put this out there: It is very important to make the distinction between added sugars and sugars that occur naturally in foods like fruits and vegetables. These are healthy foods that contain water, fiber and various micronutrients. The naturally occurring sugars are ok in wait for it: MODERATION! However, added sugars are those that are added to foods. The most common added sugars are regular table sugar (sucrose) or high fructose corn syrup and etc.. MAIN POINT: So you are trying to eat healthy as much as possible and stay on track but the for the majority of people you cant do that everyday and think about how many foods you consume that have added sugar(condiments, soda, microwave foods, eating out, and the list goes on). Now think about how much added sugar you have consumed from these foods combined with the sugar you already ingested from the healthy juice drinks. ...the math does not work in your favor and that is the point....unless you really watch your sugar intake from the healthy sources you are not helping yourself because of the amount of sugar you will consume inadvertently throughout the DAY! So I went to the grocery store did the research and wanted to provide the insight for everyone; here are the popular juice brands I see in peoples homes and here is the analysis in terms of sugar consumption, and lastly we noted our thoughts on which one is the lesser of all evils! 1) Naked Brand Juice Green Machine Sugar 28 grams Fiber 0 grams Carbs 33 grams Protein 2 grams Calories per serving: 140 calories per 8oz glass VERDICT: lots of sugar, carbs, little protein......avoid this! 2) Bolthouse farms Strawberry Banana Sugars 22 grams Fiber 2 grams Carbs 32 grams Protien 1 gram Calories per serving: 130 calories per 8oz glass VERDICT: Lower sugar content, has fiber (take total carbs minus fiber to equal amount of active carbs you actually take in thus 30 grams here), less calories and 1 gram protein...still not great but better than Naked green machine...drink in moderation 3) Noble brand Tangerine juice Sugars 23 grams Fiber 0 grams Carbs 30 grams Protien 0 grams Calories per seving: 125 calories per 8oz serving VERDICT: Sugars are high, no protien, no fiber, high carbs, and similar calories to the others thus avoid this as there is very little in way of phytonutrients as well. 4) POM Wonderful Sugars 31grams Fiber 0 grams Carbs 37 grams Protien 0 grams Calories per seving: 150 calories per 8oz serving VERDICT: THE ABSOLUTELY WORST SO FAR! HIGHEST IN SUGAR AND CARBS AND NO FIBER....AVOID! 5) SUJA Elements Macachino Sugars 11grams Fiber 3 grams Carbs 15 grams Protien 3 grams Calories per seving: 130 calories per 364 ml which is 12oz and there is one serving per bottle. VERDICT: If you remember a previous post I did not rate the SUJA Elements brand very high but this particular flavor is the best of the list! Low sugar because it has coconut palm sugar which is a great alternative to regular sugar, more protein than the others, 3 grams of fiber and only 15 carbs so carbs minus fiber you only store roughly 12 carbs! Lastly the calories are acceptable range! Granted this is not a true apples to apples comparison of these drink brands however this drink of the list has everything in moderation....which is key.. Hope this helps and enjoy in.....wait for it.....moderation!
