OWLS! Heres an occasional visitor to La Esperanza: Mottled Owl. Recorded while laying in bed this morning, this guy also came recently when we were jamming pretty hard with Ozzie Osbourne the other evening in Cabin #3. Yes! I kid you not; Esteban and I had a no-show the other day; he was spending the night anyway, so we had Black Sabbath on a large music amp I use for rehearsing voice and harmonica, it got a bit loud and, lo and behold, Strix virgata came right up next to the porch to chime in! We both really got a kick out of our rockin Mottled Owl. Hes great, and so is the Tropical Screech that breeds on-site, but I have to say I miss some old buds like pygmy owls. I havent lived anywhere in the neo-tropics where Glaucidium wasnt regular and close by... At any rate, it was good to have virgata on hand right now because Steve Hilty had called attention to a mouth imitation I did of Rufous-banded that I said was virgata. Well, a bit embarrassing to confuse the two, but complimentary that the imitation was that good! Albitarsis, or Rufous-banded Owl, is the one I used to get in Bogotá some years ago. Virgata is about 4 pretty regular notes, while albitarsis has 3-4 preps and a strong ending whistle. To give myself credit: I have recorded this species in four countries and the Central American virgata is a bit more like albitarsis in varying stress of syllables... Interesting asides: > The little red dot is a transmission tower light from almost 1/2 km away! > The frog is one yet unidentified, but common here, especially in and around the pond now. There is a weak area I hope to work on soon; Mateo Hernandez has suggested some frog species to introduce in our natural aquatic habitat, but I wont get to that until I have collected some rails... > At first I thought it weird that sounds could not be loaded here, because I would normally separate them out if taken on the video-cam or load from sound files recorded as such, but now I kind of like the video restriction; every time there is some cool detail that comes out on the vid: something quirky or strangely complimentary. The black screen with the little red dot ... well .... OK ...... > Kind of like the big Varcino tree we have in the middle of a very long stair coming in Cabin #4: At first, as we laid out the various landings, we discovered: OH ..... DAMN! Theres a tree in the middle! Then it was: OH! .... COOL! Theres a tree in the middle! So now we hug it every time we go down and everyone loves it! Even has orchids since augmented ...
