Oakwood High Schools Interact Club hosted its annual Smackdown on Wednesday during lunch. The Middle School Junior Interact Club also helped with the event. Eighteen volunteers, dressed in garbage bags, shower caps and goggles, took plates of whipped cream in the face over and over again from students who paid in total $975 for the privilege. Oakwoods Interact Club, which is 78 members strong, decided that this years Smackdown proceeds will go to help people living in villages in Kenya learn vital life skills to help them escape poverty and all that goes with it. City of Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate was one of the 18 volunteers, an active Rotarian, who took 46 plates of whipped cream to his face. Unbelievably, he headed to a meeting immediately after the event. Many middle and upper school teachers participate, and students seemed to feel a great sense of empowerment as they threw their plates of whipped cream at their favorite teachers. Middle school teacher Mr. Hayden had 96 plates thrown at him, which was the second highest number. Representing the lower school teachers was beloved 1st grade teacher Mrs. Doughty, who took the most pies to the kisser with a grand total of 196! Elementary students came out in droves for that chance, as well as for the promise from Mrs. Doughty of an additional 20 minutes of extra playtime on the playground, which is scheduled for Friday afternoon. The Interact Club thanks everyone who helped with and participated in this creamy event!
