Obasanjo compares nation’s economy to Abacha era:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: A former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has compared the economy under the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to that of the late dictator, General Sani Abacha, where the middle class was non-existent and banished to poverty. He made this comparison when a group of traders visited him at his Hilltop home in Abeokuta over the weekend. The former president said he was surprised to have received a text message from a middle class Nigerian requesting for financial assistance from him. This, he said clearly indicated that the middle-class had been destroyed by the current prevailing economic situation in the country. He said, “I told him (SMS sender) that we have experienced this period in time of Abacha, when all the middle class was completely destroyed.”Obasanjo also told his guests another story of distress involving a military man who could not afford to buy a new car.He added, “I was surprised the day a Colonel in the Army came to me complaining that he and his family could not afford to buy a car.”The former president was not done yet. He regaled his visitors with another story of a family friend who relocated to Saudi Arabia due to hard times being faced at home.He explained, “A friend of mine, Dr. Okoro, a medical doctor, his wife also a medical doctor and they have daughter too, who is also a medical doctor. The three of them could not afford a new car, they had to go to Saudi Arabia.”Obasanjo who, however, said tough times do not last forever, and when tough times come, tough people get going, added that “we will keep going and we will survive this though time.”The National President of the Nigerian Market/Traders Council, Mrs Osho, said the visit was meant to get the direction of the former president on the 2015 election. She said the council had tremendous support of the former President during his eight year rule, “as such, we deem it necessary and as a mark of respect to come and find out on which direction we are going.”Obasanjo, however, said he was waiting on divine guidance before he could make up his mind.He said,”As for me, we don’t know where we are going yet, may God show us the way. The way that will take this country and make it a great country, and when I understand and I see the way, I will tell you. I pray that God will show me the way, may God show you the way.”
