Obasanjo shares 40% cassava bread with African leaders By Jimoh Babatunde with agency report, On May 19, 2013 • In Finance *former Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo (left); former President of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa (next to Obasanjo from left); Tanzania’s President, Dr Mrisho Jakaya Kikwete (in red tie and holding cassava bread); and IITA Director for Eastern Africa, Dr Victor Manyong (far right) during the inauguration of IITA Science Building in Dar es Salaam Former Nigeria’s President, Olusegun Obasanjo, took the 40 percent cassava flour inclusion in bread to Tanzania recently as he urged the Tanzania President to promote the use of cassava in confectioneries in his country to transform agriculture. He noted that the use of cassava flour in bread would stimulate the demand for the root crop, create jobs and, more importantly, make farmers proud. My comment Note that keeping people alive and healthy and promoting long life are not mentioned. What is promoted is radical materialism. Do Yoruba people not say Alafia ni ogun oro?; and alafia lo ju? What kind of elder and chief is Chief Obasanjo for promoting radical materialism above the values of human live, good health, and longevity? Story continues Obasanjo who is the Goodwill Ambassador for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) was in Tanzania for the inauguration of the IITA Science Building in Dar es Salaam. Former Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo and the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency, Dr Mrisho Jakaya Kikwete, eat bread baked with 40 percent cassava flour to show their endorsement. My comment The first thing that should be said and noted VERY SERIOUSLY about the last statement is that there is NO EVIDENCE that the bread with 40% cassava is safe for consumption. NO ONE has produced full report about how the GM cassava was developed, NO safety study report, NO independent peer review, and NO independent certification of it as safe for consumption. Professor Richard Sayre who led the team that developed the GM cassava—which included Dr. Martin Fregene, the Adviser to Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina (Agric), and Dr. Ada Mbanaso of RCRI, Umudike, Imo State—did NOT follow the rule!!! Note also that Prof. Sayre wrote about the difficulties of developing the GM cassava in the manner that says that it is not safe for consumption; it is only good as a source of industrial starch. Not surprising three members of the same group and two other people who developed another GM cassava in the same Bill Gates’ Donald Danfort Institute where our own GM cassava was developed could not provide evidence to back up their claims that it is safe and will provide all nutrients necessary for developing nations. The journal that published it—PLoS ONE—had to dissociate itself from by withdraw its publication and retracting its approval comment. See if I have lied or told the truth by reading from the website of the journal that published it—PloS ONE: plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0016256#aff1 The report of one of the groups that demanded proof of safety and nutrient content which led to the retraction of the publication can be read at the website: retractionwatch.wordpress/2012/09/14/plos-one-gmo-cassava-paper-retracted-after-data-could-not-be-found/ But for our case we have not questioned the safety of the GM Cassava or the bread and their nutrient content. We have accepted it because we are FOOLS and GLUTTONS. Now even the respected former president and a Chief of high standing in Owu is acting as the ambassador of deadly food to other African countries. What should that be called? Another thing that should be said, noted very seriously, and acted on, is that the IITA, Ibadan was established to carry out and institutionalise the genetic RE-engineering of our native, natural and safe sources of foods and to cause our native and natural sources of foods to be stolen and taken to the USA and some parts of Europe where they are now put in what is called Gene Bank and Seed Bank. It is generally known as Doomsday Gene/Seed Bank because the intention of the creators of them who are also behind the genetic RE-engineering of native and natural sources of foods, is that when GMOs fail the developing countries, the owners of the gene/seed banks will have right, charge, authority and control over all the native, natural and safe genes and seed in the banks. We will have to buy every see for our farming. Check, Doomsday Gene bank Norway in the internet. The IITA, Ibadan, is under the umbrella of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The establishment of the CGIAR was by the USA, Bill Gates and the Rockefeller as a strategic means of interfering with, disrupting, and destroying our agricultural advantages just the renowned Professor Ade Ajayi wrote in his Merit Award Lecture (1993) concerning the World Bank’s first visit from Nov 1953 to Feb 1954, and just as the USA used the Rockefeller and the Norman Borlaug to interfere with, disrupt and devastate the agricultural advantages of India. As for Chief Obasanjo, it was reported that he was going bankrupt before the genetic RE-engineering of our native, natural and safe cassava was mentioned to him as the president. He accepted it without thinking, asking questions, and ensuring that it was not an American gift. As you know, if the US government gives you one naira, it will make you pay to it at least one hundred naira. Chief Obasanjo thought only about getting out of red and getting into DARK BLACK on his ledger card and not about the lives and health of his fellow Nigerians. That shows lack of nationalism, patriotism and loyalty to Nigerians. It is not fatherly, not grandfatherly, and not elderly because Yoruba people say agba kii wa ni oja ki ori omotuntun wo. It is high time he learnt that he was wrong and stopped helping our enemies to disadvantage us and murder us and fellow Africans. Story continues Former President Benjamin Mkapa of the United Republic of Tanzania also ate the bread for the first time. The leaders supported the innovation, noting that it would bring several benefits to the continent. President Kikwete after eating the cassava bread commended IITA for the technology, saying that the bread had an “excellent” taste. “There is no difference between this bread and the normal bread we are used to,” he added. My comment Presidents Mkapa and Kikwete were influence by respect for Chief Obasanjo and not by scientific evidence. The use of highly-ranked but mindless persons is one of the strategies for harming, disadvantaging and killing Africans, including Nigerians. The failure to find out about the bread themselves is their fault. As for “no difference”, there is NO ROOF that there is no difference. The difference is internal—cellular, molecular, and based on nutrient content—and not external. Foods are not safe based on look or taste. They are certified safe based on toxicity, allergenicity and nutrient content study. The story continues The 40 percent cassava bread was first developed by IITA in Nigeria, as part of efforts to boost the utilization of cassava and create market for farmers. The Director General for IITA, Dr Nteranya Sanginga said today that the bread innovation is part of the cassava value chain, stressing that it complements breeding efforts. In Nigeria, IITA Ambassador Obasanjo, in 2002 initiated a policy on 10 percent inclusion in bread under a program tagged “the Presidential Initiative on Cassava.” The program which was implemented by IITA and national partners, drove the demand for cassava, increased productivity by about 10million tons in 6 years, and made Nigeria the top world producer of cassava. The IITA Ambassador urged African governments seeking genuine agricultural transformation to adopt the use of cassava in confectioneries, and institute policies that would make the continent food secure and cut import bills on food. To facilitate the adoption of the technology across countries in Africa, IITA deployed a team of expert to train local bakers on the inclusion of cassava flour in bread in Tanzania. Dr Victor Manyong, IITA Director for Eastern Africa noted that the adoption of the technology would improve the livelihoods of farmers, bakers and have a positive impact on the economy of Tanzania. Consumed by more than 600 million people in the developing world, cassava has transformed from a food security crop to a cash crop with industrial uses in sectors such as brewery, pharmaceutical and confectionery industries. The crop is one of Africa’s major staples, with the continent cultivating about 50 percent of global production. My Comment My final comment to cover the whole of the above is that since the IITA was established in Ibadan, food supply or availability has been diminishing NOT increasing—except on paper—the cost of foods have been increasing not decreasing—except on paper—and diseases and deaths have been increasing—due to foods—and NOT decreasing. This should be clear to ALL Nigerians. vanguardngr/2013/05/obasanjo-shares-40-cassava-bread-with-african-leaders/
