Observed this exchange between two ninth grade honors students in an area high school a few minutes ago as they perused their graded essays that had just been returned to them: Student 1: I cant even read her comments. She always writes in cursive. Its like another language! Student 2: I know. I can read some of the words, but I cant write it at all. Ive noticed that most assignments are completed on the students computers these days, which is great, and teachers usually make their comments electronically. However, that little conversation makes me wonder if there is still a need for them to learn cursive. Ive seen this debated quite a bit lately. What do you think? Should our schools teach students how to read and write using this antiquated form of communication?
