Obviously there is no way I can individually thank everyone that came out and assisted us yesterday with the issue on the Interstate. First and foremost thanks to the men and women of the Lorena Police Department. I know you had just gotten off shift or it was your day off. Thanks for coming in when we called. We have truly some of the best peace officers I have had the pleasure of working with in my 30 year career. State agencies were out in force. TxDOT, DPS and the Game Wardens all came to assist. They manned intersections so that people could move through the gridlock on the back roads and FM highways. There would have probably been a lot of fist fights and road rage if these guys were not there. Local agencies came to our call. The Sheriff’s Office, Moody (even though they don’t normally have an Interstate running through their city, they had one yesterday! Sorry guys!), Crawford, Hewitt and Walt Strickland, the Constable for Pct. 1 to name a few. The Lorena VFD sent trucks and personnel out. If you ever want to see something funny, watch a fireman direct traffic. The Utility guys brought barricades and stood out and directed traffic. They are even funnier to watch than the firemen. Don’t forget the most underappreciated guys and gals in Law Enforcement… our dispatchers (Woodway and SO). They had nothing to do with this mess and they probably got chewed out the most. Frank Patterson had his Emergency Management equipment set up and provided a place for the decision makers to meet and get up to date information. Wayne Canaday from McLennan County Radio Shop brought out generators. Lane Construction, the highway construction folks, came through with flying colors again. There is not a better company to work with. Period! The local businesses... Brookshire Brothers, Raymond’s, Bush’s and Alto De Jalisco. Their toilets flushed more times yesterday that they did all year. If they could have sold answers to “How do I get to Austin” they all would have been rich folks today. Some people that worked very hard we never saw. To them, Thanks! To the citizens and business of Lorena! Hands down the best place to live, raise a family and shop. Just remember that when it is all said and done it will be beautiful! You have heard it before…Growing Pains! Yesterday the pain was 10 on a scale of 10… And finally to all that were stuck in traffic in our city. We really are not this slow most of the time. When we get our highway built come take time to eat or visit our businesses or churches. We have one of the prettiest little downtowns around! We think you will love it… and hopefully you will forget about all that cussin’ you were doing yesterday. In closing, I would be remiss not to point out something good from yesterday…it was not our typical 101 degree July day. More to come… Chief Dickson
