Obávám se, že pravdivé! Luc Vncrn The secret EU-Ukraine war Everybody worries about the Ukrainian army, but the Ukrainian economy is way weaker and is Ukraines weakest link. There is no way Ukraine can survive until January without outside financial help. The donor conference got postponed once again to January. This is the fourth postponement. It is unclear who the culprit is but probably both the EU and the Ukrainian government are trying to intimidate each other. Not exactly what is needed to repel the Russian aggressor. The Ukrainians are trying to lure the EU into giving money without strict conditions. Doing this might turn out a risky strategy on behalf of the EU given Ukraine’s ruling elites blatant refusal to do anything about their rampant corruption. The EU desperately wants Ukraine to do something about the corruption since that effectively makes all financial aid useless. In the current economic climate it would be very painful for EU politicians to read in a few years from now horror stories of relief funds diverted by oligarchs to prop up their ailing businesses. The big problem with this wait and see approach on both sides is that once the total implosion starts and people cause a bank run on the already very weak financial system you will effectively see hyperinflation like in the nineties. That will cause a further collapse of the Ukrainian economy or what is left of it. There is already no money to bail out the banks now let alone when a bank run starts. At that moment the EU will pick up a bill that is way higher. Ruining their economy is the standard procedure for Ukrainian politicians/oligarchs, no help should be expected from them. The EU should give money to Ukraine only on condition of being allowed to establish its own Serious Fraud Office in Ukraine based on OLAF expertise and with full police and prosecutor powers and the ability to trial every arrested suspect in a EU court. These are exceptionally harsh conditions but Ukrainian elites deserve them. It would be the only system with the necessary credibility to prevent major theft. There is no way that Ukraine can get a working justice system running in the coming two years. At the level of the justice system Ukraine has been a failed state for the past decade at least if not longer. If the EU does not solve this issue drastically the rest of the Ukrainian society will become a failed state as well in spite of the courageous efforts of its civic community. The sad part of the current Ukrainian – EU stalemate is that the victims are already known, they are called the ordinary Ukrainian citizens that happen to be the same ones that fought on Maidan and now in Donbas. The suffering of the Ukrainian people seems to be endless.
