Occasionally a band will give you more than one version of the same song. Let it Be by The Beatles features different guitar solos in their different versions, and multiple Weezer songs could be different depending on when you pick up the album. Rivers Cuomo likes to keep tweaking his songs like hes the George Lucas of pop music. It doesnt happen too often with most bands, but I think its pretty cool when it does. The differences can maybe give you a little insight into what the band might have been thinking. Tonight Im featuring a song from The Shins. Spilt Needles originally appeared on the album Wincing the Night Away. When the group released the single for Phantom Limb, they released it with an alternate version of Spilt Needles. I prefer the alternate version, and the band must have liked it too considering the fact that they released it. So why did they go with a different version for the album? My guess that the alternate version just didnt fit the tone. If you compare the alternate Spilt Needles to the rest of Wincing the Night Away, they sound like theyre from completely different albums. It probably would have sounded jarring if they had used it. For the record, Im not saying that I dont like the album version. I like it too. It does sound best within the context of the album. However, if Im listening to a song by itself, I prefer the alternate version. Heres the album version for comparisons sake: youtube/watch?v=b84TyRyZenE - Mr. Big #TheShins #SpiltNeedles #alternateversion
