October 15 Update: So, we went to Orlando last week for Colby’s - TopicsExpress

October 15 Update: So, we went to Orlando last week for Colby’s wish trip. We went to Disney World, Sea World & Universal Studios & had a blast. We stayed at Give Kids the World which is such an amazing place. While we were there Colby started developing a rash in his groin/left upper thigh region. We just assumed it must be a heat rash or maybe even an allergic reaction to detergent. As the week went on the rash got a little bigger & started forming blisters. By Thursday Colby was having intense pain in his left thigh. We thought he was having muscle cramps. We ended up cutting our trip a little short to get back home because he was becoming more miserable. We got home late Friday night & 12 hours later we were in the ER. Colby kept saying the pain he was having was coming from the rash but we didn’t think the 2 were connected at first. I called our Dr & described his symptoms & he said that was shingles. So we were admitted into the hospital Saturday. Not sure how long we will be inpatient. The Dr said at least a week. It depends on how quickly his rash heals. He is on iv antibiotic & an antibiotic cream that we put on his sores. He is also on morphine as needed for the nerve pain in his thigh. By yesterday the rash had spread & he has blisters all over. The rash covers almost his entire left thigh & he has a small area on his back. I took a picture yesterday at hopefully its worst but I was debating whether or not to post it. Its graphic & just plain horrible looking but I also want to let people see how bad it is. Not sure about posting it…. Colby also is running a high fever. We just couldn’t seem to break it at all yesterday. Over an hour period his temp never was below 100. His fever finally broke overnight but it came back today but maybe it’s a sign that the fevers will decrease as well. We also had an issue Sunday night with his port. It seemed to have clotted & the needle apparently worked its way out of the port. This caused his IV fluids to collect under his skin instead of going directly into a vein. He woke up in the middle of the night & said his chest felt big. It was very swollen from the fluids. The nurses deaccessed his port & tried several times to reaccess it but there was too much fluid in the way. He had to have an IV in his arm (which he hates) until yesterday evening when the fluid finally went down enough for his port to be reaccessed. So needless to say he has had a rough few days.
