Officials from the Erie Redevelopment Authority say theyre making progress when it comes to removing blighted properties. The blighted property review committee recently declared 78 properties in the city as blighted. Kim Green, the executive director of the authority, says its the first step in the process of forcing property owners to remove blight and improve the house. Since 2006, there have been 254 properties taken off the list, with 166 of those coming off in 2010. Its a lengthy process for the authority to take over a property by eminent domain, but once they do theyre able to clean up the area. Green says they are able to fix up these properties through community block grants, but the ERA has seen a decrease in funding over the last several years.
