Ogun state police sealed off a controversial town hall project purportedly sponsored by a serving senator, Akin Odunsi, but said to be a federal government project. The federal lawmaker and his supporters from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were on Saturday billed to commission the project in Ota, the heart of Awori town when a detachment of the police arrived and sealed off. Police said it acted on a petition filed by the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state which argued that it is a federal government project and that the senator was trying to lay claim for its construction and to earn the glory. Speaking on the development, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said police’s action was meant to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the town as well as in the state. Mr. Adejobi explained further that, the police acted on a petition allegedly written by the PDP to the Assistant Inspector-General Police, (AIG) and copied the state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye. “Yes, we sealed- off the place in the public interest; in order to prevent break down of law and order in the area as well as in the general interest of the state based on an earlier petition from the PDP,’’ he stated. “We received a petition from the PDP that the project that was to be commissioned was actually a federal government’s project, which the senator was to hijack and arrogate its completion and success to himself and not the federal government,” the police image maker stressed. He told journalists that the command was ‘’treating the petition objectively, hence we have dialogued with the senator and explained to him why the project would not be commissioned, but we have asked him to go ahead with the chieftaincy title’’.
