Oh... Joyful days. Im always thankful when these days present themselves. Slater is interactive, making tons of his special noises, hums and laughter. Oh, he does have daily meltdowns but lately hes been extra lovey-dovey. Everyday he enjoys evening walks with nanny Maybeth and our housekeeper Linda (its not in her job description but she does it because she cares). Bless them both. Slater still goes to bed at 2-3 in the morning and that sucks but weve been dealing with a lack of zzz slaters whole life. My mind always worrys about the future, slaters health and mine. A lot of parents that have autistic children suffer from depression and anxiety and thats ok. I totally believe in medication when needed. I know it keeps me sane...or at least I think I am... Lol. The one thing I havent talked about is potty training. OMG...it took seven long and painful years, maybe even eight. Now, patience has never been my strong point and boy, did that ever test them. I remember trying every trick in the book. I mean everything but the one thing that did work was monitoring his intake of fluids and timing it with a bathroom run. I remember sitting on the floor of the bathroom treats in my hand, with the tub and sink running with water as my son sat on the toilet and sat and sat....soooooo much waiting. Take your time folks because what takes a typical child to learn in weeks may take your child years. I always looked at it as more rewarding for us because it took so much work. When slater accomplished the goals we set out. The reward was that much sweeter. Hell, I was feeling a natural high for weeks because he did it. Just remember, patience is a virtue...we were gifted these angels for a reason so go, cup that childs face in your hands, look them in the eye (because we all know eye contact is key) and give them a big wet kids. I know I will. -here is slater walking with Linda and Maybeth-
