Oh Momma....no wonder you were running through my mind the past couple of days. I do not even know how to express the amount of gratitude I owe you. I am not sure the Tri-State will ever be able to express the amount of gratitude we owe you for being fearless in a hate filled society when things were just not as easy as they are now. I will never forget the way you knew my inner fear of who and what I really was/am and when you helped push me into the spotlight of mainstream society as a gay man. You taught me to love myself and love the skin I am in...even though I still struggle with that today. You taught me to be confident and never let anyone treat me like I am second best....which I am getting better at with time. Most important...you taught me there is absolutely no shame in embracing filth and putting it on display is a glorious thing. My soul is sad that you found the world such a hard place, but that is the way with the best people. I am thankful for you and all of the fabulous individuals who were brave and paved the way and be bold in the spotlight before it was really safe to be out and proud in Huntington WV...in this world, there are people who are and there are people who are legends....in my minds eyes...you are legends.
