Oh a horrible day here in the Yorkshire Dales even my garden birds - TopicsExpress

Oh a horrible day here in the Yorkshire Dales even my garden birds are hiding and dont want to come to my feeder :( So I decided to think about something more pleasant. I am thinking about trying to go back to visit the Farne Islands if my health permits. These are a National Trust Bird Reserve between Newcastle and Edinburgh. You can get accommodation at Seahouses or camp there. Then you get a day trip on a boat that will take you to the Farnes. Some trips allow you to land on the islands some dont. If you do go onto the islands Fairy and Arctic Terns will dive bomb you. You need a hat! You will see razorbills, bridled and unbridled guillemots, eider ducks, cormorants, shags, too many species of gull to name and best of all PUFFINS!! maybe a gannet will fly past from its nest at Bass Rock just up the coast, although I dont think they do nest at Farne? Eider Ducks are very amusing indeed. When I was there the RSPB were doing a survey. They wanted to find out how many eggs the ducks had laid so they were trying to put their hands under the sitting duck to count eggs. It really wasnt a good idea. NOBODY shifts an Eider from its nest. They just sit there no matter how close you get. Victorians used to have Eiderdowns, as they caught them and used their down feathers for bedding. I would absolutely LOVE to see some pictures from our wonderful photographers if any of you can make it. Easter time is best. This page will help you to get there and find accomodation :) nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/
