Ok... Annoyed, shocked, and very concerned as a nurse. Had ABC news on in the background while getting ready for work this past Friday evening... a rare thing for me to listen to one of the major news stations and it wont happen again for a long while. Suddenly I hear interviews with two of the nurses who took care of the first Ebola patient in Texas, talking about the mans final hours and the media plastering the mans name everywhere, including mentioning it during the interviews. Now these nurses are being applauded by the public and even by other nurses for speaking out... What?? Ebola, or ANY infectious disease, is a public health concern. Press releases and even press conferences by public health officials regarding the diseases and containment are a must. But interviews with major media by two nurses who took care of the first patient in the U.S.?? Have we thrown patient and family privacy completely out the door??? Kudos to the nurse who held the mans hand as he died - but unethical, unprofessional, and a complete disregard for what little privacy the man had left (none) for a nurse to participate in such an interview. I am in shock at these nurses. And Texas Presbyterian is ok with the interviews?? A public health concern may trump HIPPA. But what happened to nursing ETHICS??
