Ok Friends. I hope for this to be my last post about my mishap - TopicsExpress

Ok Friends. I hope for this to be my last post about my mishap last weekend. Its gonna be about many aspects of my accident so bear with me as this is a long one. Here goes: I hope this will convince everyone who rides a bike or has a child who rides a bike to make sure you/they wear a helmet. (Yes even you knucklehead parents who insist that your kids wear a helmet but it is ok for you not to put on a helmet.). For the second time in the last 7 years of riding, during a leisurely ride with friends. my helmet saved my life. Please take a look at the last two photos of my old bike helmet. The first is a shot of the inside...look on the upper right corner of the photo and you will see the start of the first crack. This starts above my right eye on my forehead. It continues on around and behind my right ear until about the point halfway between the back of my ear and the back of my head. You can see the end of the crack near the left side of the photo. The second photo is from the outside, which clearly shows a couple marks of something I landed on at impact and some of the breaking of the helmet. My helmet broke when I biked into one of the orange trail makers that denotes a road crossing on the trail (knucklehead me) I lost focus, hit the pole and (after looking at the helmet and riding cloths) want up and over my handlebars and was driven by the impact straight down head and shoulder first into the concrete. This caused the helmet to do what it was designed to do...break and crumple instead of my head. Unfortunately my clavicle was broken in four pieces and I had surgery. I now have 9 screws and a metal plate in my shoulder. The next couple of photos show my incision, bruising and the ex ray of my hardware. Miraculously, and thank God, I live to ride again. Ride safe everyone and please wear a helmet...you know, Christmas is coming up and a helmet makes a perfect gift for the ones you love. Oh, almost forgot. The bike survived without as much as a scratch. Weird.
