Ok, I dont know if I manage to be here later, for this first friday, so Ill just open the old games you must absolutely play before you die week now. As first game I want you to at least try, is Vagrant Story. Vagrant story is an ActionRpg for ps1 but with some characteristic of the basic turns of Rpg, developed by Squaresoft, in the late 90. The game takes place in a medieval\gothic atmosphere, full of cathedrals, churches, but also small towns, forest and ruins. I wont, of course spoiler anything, because just like I hate spoiler, it may be the same to you. You are a special unit of the Riskbreaker(SOLDIER, anyone?), named Ashely Riot, sent on a particular and of course, dangerous mission. The story is kinda slow to evolve, and you manage to understand what is really happening to Lea Mondè(the location where the story happens) only like in the second half of the game. Now lets go for the tecnical details. Vagrant storys gameplay allows you to completely customize your way to fight, while assisting you with more or less luck. While you can totally arrange, forge, combine your weapon, accessory, improving your equipment stats, the base stats can only be raised with a sort of slot you get every boss defeated or with particular items. So, its just up to you if you want to be a swordman, a brute barbarian, a sorcerer or simply an adventurer with only a little sword and a shield. In the battle mode you can freely move in all the area, but when it comes to attack, youll see a big sphere surrounding Ashely. That Sphere is the range of the weapon you use, and it changes considering the kind of weapon you use and the type of attack(physical, spells, break arts). I said type of attack, and mentioned break arts. You can consider break arts like the Limit breaks from Final Fantasy VII. With the slim difference that it consumes hp or mp, and the break art is chained to the weapon you use. If a dagger gaves you a certain break art, you cannot use that art with an axe, or a spear. Instead, youll have different arts. There is a sort of auto-analyze in the sphere on the battle mode. It will indicates your successful rate of the attack and how much damage you should be able to deal. Why that? Because you can decide where to attack your target. Arms, legs, head, body are the usual parts you can attack, but of course, if there are enemies like dragons, chimera, some new parts can be attacked, like neck. Lets conclude the battle system saying that, when you start to be more expert, you can add combos to the single attack, but only if you practiced enough with that kind of weapon. Combos allow you not only to deal some damages, but also to add status to the enemy. Counter part : combos raises the Risk bar, spotted just below the Hp bar. If the risk bar starts to fill a lot, youll be more exposed to attack and your chances to fail the attack are higher. My personal rate for this game is : Gameplay : 8 Sound : 8 Plot : 8 Graphic : 8 Longevity : 7 This is a game I recommend to every single of you who likes rpgs in general.
