Ok...first let me say as a reenactor, I understand that sometimes a generic impression is necessary, not everything was documented, but a generic impression should only be chosen when all other forms of research have proven fruitless, as living historians we are obligated to show the public what people in history wore/used to the best of our ability. Second, having said that not everything was documented, try out what I call common sense reenacting, this can be done at long events or on your own personnel time, Don your uniform and equipment, and try camping/hiking etc with it, you will find ways to be comfortable such as you can, and discover what is truly necessary and what can be discarded, you may wear your gear in a way seldom seen in reenacting, but if your living in it, and better able to function as a soldier of that time, using the same things they had, (ordinary, readily available etc) then go for it (steps off soapbox)
