Ok, thoughts from the #PennState game today: First, a good come from behind win against a good #UCF team that probably shouldve been ranked to start the season. Hackenberg had a pretty good day, but he underthrew several balls and got picked off twice. He did set the school record for passing yards in a single game with 454 yards. He was also the first PSU quarterback to throw for over 400 yards per game. The O-line did a pretty good job for the most part keeping pressure off Hackenberg, particularly in the first half, but they didnt do nearly as well in the second half. Neither team did a good job running (PSU 57 yards, UCF 24 yards), though to be fair, UCF is trying to replace Storm Johnson and was playing from behind for most of the game. I wonder what the game wouldve looked like if Justin Holman wouldve started the game instead of Pete DiNovo, as DiNovo was completely incapable of running the offense in the first half. Hackman found three new favorite targets in Geno Lewis (8 rec 173 yd 1 TD), DaeSean Hamilton (11 rec 165 yd), and Jesse James (7 rec 60 yd). Geno Lewis was particularly impressive on the touchdown throw as he completely faked out 2 DBs and the Safety on the give and go and caught the pass with a 15 yard cushion. I thought the defense for the most part played very well, they got tired late and I think that helped to contribute to UCFs late comeback. For the most part, I thought the PSU Cornerbacks played a pretty good game. Sam Ficken was a pleasant surprise as he makes pretty much every Penn State fan think oh god... whenever he comes out to kick going 4-4 plus the game winning kick as time expired. Too many penalties committed by both teams, particularly PSU (9-90), but I think the refs (who were American Conference since it was technically a UCF Home game) made some very questionable calls, particularly the offensive pass interference at the end of the first half that turned a probable touchdown drive into a field goal. Very pleased to see PSU come away with a win. They need to get the O-line more solidified so the running game can take some of the pressure of Hackenberg. Keep in mind, this wasnt a cupcake game like many teams play this week, so for PSU to not put up video game numbers isnt a big surprise. -Andrew (@pyrolord314)
