Okay. So who wants to go with me to the catacombs? - TopicsExpress

Okay. So who wants to go with me to the catacombs? Bwahahahahahahaha. In the late 1700s, due to health hazards and lack of space, graves all over Paris were dug up and the remains of those inhabitants were moved into underground tunnels. Today, the bones of over six million people are entombed in the Catacombs and, while originally only used as a large, underground burial site, it has evolved into a more artistic and architectural interest with walls and other formations created from human bones. While the ossuary is the main attraction for tourists, the tunnels stretch for miles throughout Paris, providing additional mystery and allure to the underground network. Murals painted by artists stretch throughout the tunnels while evidence of cataphiles, or those who illegally tour the network of tunnels, can be easily found. Though gaining access to the rest of the tunnels may be possible, if caught, would result in a 100 euro fine. Otherwise, the Catacombs are a great place to get a taste of the world that lies just below the streets of Paris. via the7eme.aup.edu
