Okay folks - this is an update that has been FOUR years in the making. As many of you know, I have a long history of medical issues. Last summer, I had what we THOUGHT was a stroke (again) while I was at work. I went via ambulance to Pres Kaseman and was treated by Dr. Elizabeth Macri. She didnt really ask me any questions, but did the standard CT scan and blood work, then said that I didnt have a stroke. She thought it was all in my head and suggested a psychiatrist. As you can imagine, this didnt go over very well. I used some choice words (that I probably wouldnt use today) and had my son get the ER Doc to release me AMA. I was DONE with doctors. Thankfully, my primary care providers LISTENED to me. They didnt know what was going on with all of my symptoms, but referred me to a neurologist. At first, I refused to go, because I didnt ever want the type of treatment I got from Dr. Macri again. It took some convincing on their part, but I finally agreed and then waited for my referral to a neurolgist in Albuquerque. He LISTENED to me. He asked QUESTIONS. He paid attention to what I had to say. He ordered tests and said there was a possibility that my Pernicious Anemia (which I was diagnosed with in April 2005) was the cause of all the problems (falls, dizzy spells, cognitive issues, numbness, swallowing problems.) My evoked potential showed that I have some issues in my spine and in my left leg. My EEG showed abnormal results in the brain. (No surprise to most of you.) The MRI was normal. My neuro just called and said that, yup, the PA is probably the cause of everything. Unfortunately, I am not absorbing ANY B-12, so the next course is to add the injections to the 15,000mcg of B-12 I am already getting in my daily vitamin regimen. There is no guarantee, but there is a possibility that, if the B-12 levels can be built up significantly, the spinal, leg and brain issues COULD be corrected. The limp and left-sided weakness wont go away, but you cant have everything. I just want to say, Dr. Macri, you were wrong. I forgive you for making the past eight months of my life such a nightmare, but I hope you will pay closer attention to your patients concerns. It WASNT all in my head. Of course, it isnt in my blood either - but hopefully we can fix that :)
