Okay, its 7pm and 5 hours till it hits. We are batten downed as much as we can. The dome is taped, the kitchen is boarded up, the carport tents are down, two loads to the dump, the roofing has extra screws, everything is organized as much as it can be. We have spent three days preparing. Im finally giving in. The couch is my cocoon. An old timer in town said, Ya know in the old days, wed just be sitting on da porch enjoying the nightfall. Wed say ooh dat wind. Drink a little, talk a little. Then maybe, oh dat wind getting strong maybe we go in. There was no internet to warn us, no preparation, no anticipation. We went down to Hamoa beach today just to check the surf and it was huge. The local big wave surfers were out and maybe 20-30 people chilling in the ridge watching. It was quite a site. To me, thinking of what it must be like in the water, I could only imagine its like having an avalanche chase you every 20 seconds. Most people are not in the water though. They are moving with deliberate purpose hurrying to the next thing that needs to be done; groceries check, propane check. The usual small talk is on hold, only short quick comments like, stay safe. Some people are going to work to clean vacation rentals, while others are cleaning their own house. Some are buying liquor others buying milk. Each on their own path to do what they can to best prepare for the storms. One thing though, this town, while we are all a little on edge, feels comfortable. Everyone is talking, communicating and sharing, and a lot of inviting is happening. Ive seen a whole lot of helping going on as if we are all on the same team. Its pretty sweet. People are are figuring out what is right and needed, what is essential, and what matters. If anything, if the storm turns and goes the other way. At least we got a cleanse of some degree and whole lot of togetherness. At the farm here, we are all hunkering down together in the dome; we are having a sleep over. We figure together is better. A few work traders from other farms are here and they are all playing music. The atmosphere here is calm and lovely. Im not sure why we chose the dome over the dojo. Maybe because its home. Wish us luck.
