Okay, so you know how Im never listen to Destroyer? I listen to Rock and Roll Over all the time. Its probably my second favorite album by the band and one of my most frequented discs ever. This album is cool for a lot of reasons. First, lets start with the production. Eddie Kramer is a much more straightforward rock producer than Ezrin, and it led to the best Kiss has ever sounded. Ezrin may have been the best producer as far as increasing the bands normal abilities, but Eddie made them sound the best. Rock and Roll Over has the best guitar tone on any Kiss record, period. The drums sound great. Everything is top-notch here. Few people know that the album was actually recorded not in a studio, but on a soundstage and Peter Criss recorded his drums in a bathroom separate from the band, which helped create that awesome drum sound. Whats great about this record is that it doesnt need to be as bombastic as Destroyer. Songs on this album can get into a groove and be a little bit more laid back and fun. Its an album that really feels like it belongs in the 70s, and thats whats so cool about it. Thats not to say that Kiss didnt continue the growth it had with Destroyer. The dynamic contrasts in I Want You are straight out of the Destroyer playbook, and doing a straight acoustic ballad Hark Luck Woman was another step forward for the band. Kiss were at the top of their game at this point, and the relationships between band members and balance of Kiss was, I feel, at its peak. Peter, having success with Beth, was able to contribute another original of his, Baby Driver, without it being shot down by the other members and Ace, while not having any songs of his own, created perhaps his most memorable guitar solos. Every song on this album is great and it really works well as a piece of music. This one is great to play at parties. The song Im going to showcase is a Kiss song basically every Kiss fan agrees is underrated. Theres even a Kiss tribute band in Cleveland named after this song. The song has a riff very similar to a certain famous T. Rex song, but the hooks are different enough where I dont consider it to be a ripoff. Its a perfect example of how this record was a groovy and awesome snapshot of the 70s...Mr. Speed. All in all, Id say that Rock and Roll Over was the best of Kiss 70s albums and I think even Destroyer fans should acknowledge it as a close second if nothing else. Kiss themselves think they could have done better, but I think the record is perfect. youtube/watch?v=65yAeOfel3g
