Okiki Oderos OPEN LETTER (2015 ~ 8). RE : OF THE TEACHERS STRIKE & THE WAGE BILL CRISIS. Fellow Kenyan, According to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) Chairperson, unchecked pay increments may lead to a spiraling of the wage bill from Kshs 568 billion to Kshs 823 billion through a Kshs 255 billion increase. Madam Serem continues to add that, Any imbalance between expenditure and revenue will result in unsustainable deficit financing and increased taxation. Kenyas current wage bill stands at an unsustainable 52%, way above global best practice. Are the teachers justified in their demand for higher salaries? Yes, they are! I believe, that as a Nation, we have not been fair to the Teaching Profession. Right from the university professor, to the kindergarten teacher. We have not practiced EQUITY Therefore, in so far as teachers are concerned, our hands are not clean, as a Nation. And, we must all take responsibility for this mess. But, we are in a new era where we have a new constitution, and a SALARIES AND REMUNERATION COMMISSION(SRC). In dealing with the TEACHERS DEMAND FOR SALARY INCREMENTS, we must be guided by two factors. Importantly, we have a new constitutional dispensation (SRC inclusive). Secondly, Kenya is facing a NATIONAL WAGE BILL CRISIS. Balance is needed. Yes, it is at this point that we must adopt the CHINESE MIDDLE WAY PHILOSOPHY! Any extreme will injure Kenyas Economy!
