Old Warley between 1st to 7th November 2013 KERPOW! Community and cops stopping winter criminals in their tracks BATMAN may have had Robin to help him rid Gotham’s streets of criminals but WMP has a greater force… the public! In a bold move away from traditional advice, ground breaking motion comics have been used by the force for the first time to show the ‘heroic’ ways communities can join the fight against crime. The Dark Nights Return - Anti-Social BehaviourThe Dark Nights Return - Anti-Social BehaviourThe Dark Nights Return - BurglaryThe Dark Nights Return - BurglaryThe Dark Nights ReturnThe Dark Nights ReturnThe Dark Nights Return - Vehicle CrimeThe Dark Nights Return - Vehicle Crime Comic strip style posters, postcards, mobile billboards and messages in the region’s biggest online newspapers also stress the importance of reporting crimes and suspicious behaviour so that officers can take action. With its own dedicated website The Dark Nights Return (westmidsheroes) campaign – launched today – aims to cut crimes which traditionally rise when the clocks go back. While crime has been driven down to record lows over the past decade, burglary, robbery and vehicle crime all spike with the darker nights. Each of these crime types now has its own motion comic crime reduction video to share online. Despite people thinking anti-social behaviour rises over winter fuelled by trick or treat pranks, statistics prove that reports of anti-social behaviour actually fall. Every day in every area of the West Midlands local people are helping police fight crime and that’s why crimes are at a 10-year low,” said Sergeant Andy Gregory the force’s lead crime reduction officer. “But while crime has fallen over the past decade, each year we see a spike in crime when the clocks go back. “To tackle this anticipated seasonal rise in crime associated with darker nights, we’re reminding people that by using a timer on lights or keeping valuables out of sight, you don’t have to be a superhero to make a big difference where you live.” Clocks go back - from 28 October * Be conscientious about property security during darker months * With the darker nights approaching fast neighbourhood police officers are encouraging residents to think about home security * Many people will now be returning home from work in the dark and often forget to leave a light on, making it obvious to a potential burglar that the property is probably unoccupied * Homeowners should consider investing in time switches, windows should always be closed and locked and, where available, house alarms should be set * Traditionally the number of burglary offences rises in the winter so we want residents to think about how they can help themselves by taking a few simple measures. Members of the public are urged to call police on 101 if they see anything suspicious or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111. Known youths have thrown an object at a passing car, the driver stopped and abuse was hurled at her by the youth. Youths are from a childrens home. Local neighbourhood team engaging with the youths. Licensed Premises * We have visited all licensed premises on the neighbourhood. * There have been no reports of licensed premises issues. Crime patterns There have been a number of spare wheels stolen from under vans. Mostly on one day. This may be a passing offender rather than a local. There is a noted increase in theft of cars. This appears to be a rogue recovery van being used to tow vehicle’s on to the back during the night. Night turn Supervision requested for observations. Overnight offences are a significant proportion of the crime figures, 2.30-4.30am. Burglaries and vehicle’s contents stolen. The vehicles appear to mostly be insecure, so offenders are walking the streets trying car door handles, a fairly silent crime if the vehicle is insecure. Local information and Community Actions PLEASE- PLEASE Do not leave valuable in un-attended cars especially Sat-Nav’s, Phones and lap tops you may as well put a sign on the car saying please break in! * Please do not leave valuables on sight in your vehicles as they may be stolen. * Please make sure that access to the rear of your property is secure and difficult to access as many of the recent burglary dwellings have been accessed from the rear- do not leave keys visible in doors. * Park vehicles in secure or well lit locations and ensure they are secured. * Please lock personal items * Keep electronic equipment hidden and not displayed as they make easy prey and are easily sold.
