On April 3, 1968 Dr. King made a speech in Memphis that would change mindsets and perspectives....It was entitled...I’ve been to the mountaintop. It was a little unique for Dr. King because the focus was more on economics, the power of our dollar, how to leverage our money to effect change. I believe along the way along the way that message was lost. We here collectively have lived through a time in history where many of us had the ability to see things that we never thought we’d see. We’ve experienced several first. First to have the opportunity t go to college, get jobs in corporations with great salaries to enjoy and the perks that come with it, but soon realized that much of what we began to experience was a facade or optical illusion that create a false sense of comfort for many that fostered a sense of individually rather than collectively. We’ve forgotten or never realized our true power, our true worth, our true gift nor did we realize how to use it to sustain ourselves and the others we are responsible for...we became dependent...don’t get me wrong we all need each other as I am my brothers keeper and iron does sharpen iron, but the key is to be interdependent by supporting each other, collaborate and leverage the resources available. “Now, what does all of this mean in this great period of history? It means that weve got to stay together. Weve got to stay together and maintain unity. You know, whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of slavery in Egypt, he had a favorite, favorite formula for doing it. What was that? He kept the slaves fighting among themselves. But whenever the slaves get together, something happens in Pharaohs court, and he cannot hold the slaves in slavery. When the slaves get together, thats the beginning of getting out of slavery. Now let us maintain unity.” ~Quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” Speech We can no longer just talk about freedom, we can no longer depend on someone else to carry us to freedom, we can no longer look for answers outside of ourselves, we can no longer sit back and wait for the change, but instead we must be the change and use our work to have the change manifest in our lives We must stand up in theses challenging times to create new community, new opportunities (many think it’s adversity because it’s dressed like work) New streams of income, new relationships, new mindsets, new strategies and new movements to navigate this new landscape. On April 4, 1968 Dr. King was assassinated....the day after his call to action So today I stand in the gap to share a message that has origins deep within the struggle, has traveled through suffering, stretched past the setbacks, hurdled over hardships, stared down abuse, circumvented challenges and persevered through pain to arrive here today and land on ears prepared for a new day.
