On August 8,1974, Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, announced that he would resign from office, effective at noon the following day. I remember watching the broadcast and learning a valuable lesson at the age of six. I was taught just like every child that not even the president is above the law. This country did not punish Richard Nixon in 1974. This country protected itself from people who think they are above our laws. This country sent a message to the world that everyone is accountable for their actions. The message that all men are created equal and not one is better. That message was intended for everyone including a thirteen year old by the name of Barack Obama. When President Obama first said “If congress won’t act I will,” he declared war on the U.S. Constitution. In January of 2015 new law makers will be sworn into office. When they take the oath of office they better pay attention to every word being said. They will swear to protect the constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. They have a few domestic enemies in Washington. Any law-maker that allows this lawlessness to continue is as guilty as the ones who are breaking the law. When politicians are not held accountable for the laws they break they become tyrants. When the president isn’t held accountable for the laws he breaks he becomes a dictator.
