On July 3, 1999 the people of the world came together at Harlems Riverbank State Park in New York City to dedicate a monument to the memory of the African victims of the Atlantic Slave Trade and the infamous Middle Passage. The next day, a crew of 18 people left New York Harbor aboard the Young America - a replica of an eighteenth century slaving vessel - to lower the monument 427 kilometers at sea in Mid-Atlantic waters facing the Continent of Africa. For three days, the Spirits of the Ancestors refused to let them return home. On Saturday, July 10, 1999 the US Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to evacuate one passenger - Shindana Cooper, a diabetic experiencing health related complications - and a navy cutter, which arrived at the site of the distressed vehicle 20 hours later in order to rescue the two-masted tall ship from the seemingly relentless grip of the Atlantic Ocean.
