On Monday Americans will honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Memorial Day, as we know it today began as Decoration Day to honor the fallen during the Civil War. The first Decoration Day was celebrated on May 30, 1868 when then Ohio congressman and future president James Garfield addressed a gathering at Arlington National Cemetery saying, “Now consider this silent assembly of the dead. What does it represent? Nay, rather, what does it not represent? It is an epitome of the war. Here are sheaves reaped in the harvest of death, from every battlefield of Virginia.
