On Monday, October 6th, our dojo is excited and honored to host Joe Takehara sensei, the most senior aikido practitioner in the Midwestern United States. A charter member of the Illinois Aikido Club, founded in 1961, Takehara sensei will discuss the mental aspects of budo from the perspective of his fifty-three years of aikido training. Also expected to be in attendance is Shojiro Sugiyama sensei, retired Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association of Chicago, who brought the Shotokan system from JKA Honbu, Tokyo, to the Great Lakes region in 1963. Both gentlemen are octogenarians and have invested decades of research into the mental and spiritual aspects of their chosen artforms. Although we practice neither aikido nor JKA-style karate, we prefer to focus on the commonalities among these systems rather than dwell on differences. We have much to learn from one another, and are particularly grateful for the opportunity to train with such legends.
