Mirrors wrote: If the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee had been a sailboat we would have watched her suffer a broken tiller, wallow in the swell and bounce on the rocks. She sustained moderate damage and got nowhere. The committee is supposed to be prioritizing changes and additions to the Park’s plan. After studying the park for four meetings, the committee was supposed to develop or at least start the prioritization for the northwest quadrant of the park. It should have been simple; this is the part of the park which is largely complete with working riparian ponds, paths, and benches. Instead, the focus of discussion by visitors and members alike was about the sports field availability in Costa Mesa. The committee members also were treated to a presentation from one member about: how youth sports parks in Costa Mesa should be better allocated, how she felt when she visited a meeting of a youth sports group, her complaint about lack of support for her cause by the city staff, and insinuations about other members’ prejudices based upon their individual friendships with each other and with the Mayor Pro Tem. In turn, she was confronted by committee members who believed she had maligned them. The committee then cancelled any useful work and adjourned, wasting the staff time and preparation. Fairview Park should serve all of the Residents of Costa Mesa. To do that, we need an advisory committee with a steady hand on the tiller, not one that drifts aimlessly in response to desires of residents and committee members to expound upon matters that interest them. Political nonsense and uncontrolled pontificating are wasting time and money – and accomplishing nothing.
