On Saturday, I made a visit to the site of Sir Thomas Brisbanes Parramatta Observatory, NSW - the first significant observatory in Australia, finished in May 1822. All that remains are two stone pillars that supported a transit telescope. The commemorative obelisk was erected in 1880 and is outside the boundary of where the observatory walls would have been. Just as my friend and I pulled up in the car at the observatory site, the song Vincent (Starry Starry Night) came over the radio! --- Mark Rigby
