On Socialized Medicine: The political ideologies of our Congressmen are always frequent targets of criticism. I believe there is a very real split in this country between people who want to pare government back to its bare essentials (laissez faire), and those who think that government should be there to insure that all citizens willing and able to work can live within their means. This includes requiring an actual livable minimal wage, basic health care for all, and safety nets for the less fortunate. Calling proponents of this second category communists is not only inaccurate, but highly unhelpful in any discussion. (Calling them Socialists isnt much better.) The United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care to its citizens. I think we should correct that deficiency. There is no doubt that the first approach would be much more affordable, and I suspect that is what drives many people in this direction. But would we really want to live in that country, where the poor have no access to quality health care? The second approach requires higher taxes on the more fortunate, of course, and a “larger” government, but it is certainly the more humane approach. As idealistic as work to earn your keep might sound, I tend to fall more in the camp of providing some basic necessities for the masses who are not able to succeed in the global market place. I believe that people who push contribute or die types of philosophies are denying the reality of real populations of people. Unless you are literally willing to eliminate (kill) the non-productive members of society, I dont see how that approach could ever work.
