On This Day: In 1863 as part of the Canyon de Chelly Campaign, Kit Carson and General James Charlatan put a bounty on all Navajo livestock in an attempt to starve the Navajos into submission. Every horse or mule brought $20, while each sheep earned a dollar. As a result of this campaign, many Navajo starved over the winter. Colonel Christopher H. "Kit" Carson had been waging a campaign against the Navajos employing a scorched earth policy, destroying homes, food and supplies. The next spring (1864), 8,000 Navajo men, women and children were forced to march or ride in wagons 300 miles (480 km) to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Navajos call this "The Long Walk," which was an attempted ethnic cleansing of the Navajo people by the US government.
