On a serious note natural calamity in our region is managed by 8 countries, including Pakistan, Iran, India, Oman, UAE etc. Each country (alphabetically) gets to pick a name for any cyclone/hurrican impacting the region. This time it was Pakistans turn, hence we chose Nilofar as the name. Now why this name? Nilofar is a persian word meaning water lily. So when a cyclone is developing at sea, it looks like a flower from the satellite images..hence keeping up with the trend of associating a female name, the team at the meteorological department kept the name Nilofar. Therefore in its true essence its actually a very well thought out name. Now in case youre wondering why these. Cyclones and Hurricanes are named after females..well during World War II, the US Navy and Airforce teams monitoring the weather conditions at sea would name them after their girl friends and wives back home. Therefore this became a unspoken trend and since has been used by all nations worldwide.
