On days like this I think of my peeps the Anti-Federalists. I have, and will always be, I suppose, a contrarian. Following the crowd was never my strong suit. Walking in lockstep was never my MO. Doing what others do was never on my radar screen. My life is more pinball than planned out. I go where the world takes me because I know I have a powerful weapon that most people do not possess or if they possess it they do not use it--my own fiercely independent mind. If it were not for the non-like minded, the people who speak out against majorities, the mavericks, the we dont just accept it because you wrote it that way peeps, wed be a lot like Iran, North Korea, and China than we are today. The brave men and women of the Anti-Federalists movement spoke up for liberty at a time when men who had just fought for it against the British drafted a Constitution as if they had forgot the blood they just spilled and why they spilled it. They spoke against the blooming of tyranny disguised as a rose of freedom. It is because they spoke out against the crowd, against the rich, the smart, the established brain trust that we have things like Freedom of the Press, the right to peacefully assemble, the right to religion (or not) the right to be protected against unlawful search and seizure. These men and women fought in their newly formed country with words and public speeches instead of swords to ensure the individual would be protected by the machinations of the majority. For free men seem to lose their love of freedom when they band together to take away another free mans right. We always argue against what we dont want until what we do want is attacked. Do not think so lightly of your oppositions right to disagree. Do not rush to take away their right to speak, assemble, to be. Because while youre wishing to take away the rights of others your own rights somehow seep onto the chopping block. Representative democracy is messy. Its sausage being made. Its ugly and most inconvenient. But then everything thats righteous is. So vote today. Vote independently. Exercise your own brain and intelligence and pick your choices and not the ones of your friends, parents or pastor. For it was the radicals, the independents, the ones outside the system that brought down some of the most tyrannical institutions this country has ever seen. Change never comes from the like-minded. Transformation never happens in conformity. Freedom never is delivered in harmony. Vote. Vote smart. Vote you. And see change.
