On my mind? UNZA days! From 1986 to 1990. The Last of the Kenneth Kaunda Boys and Girls then! After Ben Chilufyas closure, the PIG (Party & Its Govt UNIP & GRZ) introduced a bursary and NINJAS (50 kwacha note was the highest currency denomination) for the 1st time in Zambia. The 3 months termly 100% bursary allocation by one Edward Kaulungombe (was the Secretary Bursaries committee then) was zmk1,050! It was enough to buy shoes, stonewashed jeans, books, skooners, silky trousers, going to valentinos and oasis disco! The porridge boys (now very respectable Directors in society and responsible fathers) however would over do it and impress momas (as walking sticks of course not mojos) run out of money to buy instant nshima, Unza wheat (bread from mini-mart at Munali filling station or the bakery in Central Street in Jesmondine), eggs for kambilombilo and dinning coupons! They would survive by begging food from each and every former school mate and newly found friends at UNZA. They would still continue with their pose - swag of trooping to the dinning hall with an empty bottle of tomato sauce wrapped in brown khaki paper. They would still buy plain nshima and pretend they were not aware the tomato sauce had run out the previous month! They would boldly approach female chongololos sponsored by the absentee landlords (sugar daddies from Freedom House - UNIP Headquarters for some relish! Life went on and luckily they graduated and are responsible citizens of the World! Life and living! Some characters! More than a quarter of a century ago! Ndaloleshafye nga twakumana! — feeling amused. Hard to forget that life experience.
