On the afternoon of 9/11 photographer Hale Gurland, also a metal sculptor, took his torches and gauges and descend to the pile that was Ground Zero. For that first week, working nights and sleeping days, Hale cut steel and witnessed the horrors of Ground Zero as a trusted volunteer professional. Using one small camera and a dozen rolls of TMAX3200, Hale recorded the otherworldly scenes of recovery.
