On the hazards of GMOs An excerpt from The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan . At the suggestion of my buddy Charlie Smith, I read this bestselling work on evolutionary botany. Its an excellent work all around, but I would particularly recommend the chapter on potatoes for anyone interested in the scientific debate around GMOs. (And yes, there is one, whether you believe it or not.) . In the book, Pollan looks at a species of GMO potato (the NewLeaf) that was still under development at the time of publication. The NewLeaf offers an advantage to potato growers in the form of a biotoxin (Bacillus thurengiensis, or Bt) that it contains in its tissues. . Although some of Pollans discussion is dated by now, the broad outlines of the GMO debate, as he describes them, are still very much in play. The essential issue will always be this: What are the implications of taking an organism that developed gradually, in the context of a complex and dynamic ecosystem, and endowing that organism with a genetic structure that it would never have developed outside of a scientists lab? . roominate/pdfs/Botany_of_Desire.pdf
