On the subject of comedy, ever since I saw Manhattan on TV when I was 15 or 16, I have been in love with it. Its one of my favorite comedies, one I can watch endlessly. But the more you are familiar with an object of love, the more you start to see its flaws. And committed lovers must accept each others flaws. The biggest flaw that comes to mind is the scene where Isaac (Woody Allen) and Mary (Diane Keaton) are taking a nighttime walk after a social function, where they discuss their failed marriages. Mary asks why Jill divorced Isaac, and he meekly says My ex-wife... left me for another woman. Mary says how terrible that must feel and Isaac casually quips Well, I took it rather well under the circumstances. I tried to run them both over with a car. Mary shakes her head at how demoralizing it must be for a man to have that happen. So, tell me who reacts to a casual, remorseless confession of attempted vehicular homicide like that? Much of the writing in Manhattan is so acute, painful and hilarious, but its hard to buy a reaction like that, especially from a woman hearing about violence towards fellow women.
