On the subject of rock & roll bands and changes in personnel, I - TopicsExpress

On the subject of rock & roll bands and changes in personnel, I have always said the greatest rock bands of all time ( and by greatest I do not mean most commercially successful ) but the greatest all are explained by this statement the whole is greater than the sum of its parts this is a very illogical statement but true and I call it the magic that is made when there is a chemistry in bands that can not be put in to words or explained it just is... Also another theory I have is that rock bands are sort of like making deserts vs cooking regular food, where as regular cooking you can say add a pinch of that or lets substitute this for that and in most cases the end result is not that much different where as in desert cooking even the slightest change or mistake in ingredients can cause the outcome to change dramatically. Relating that to rock bands, even the slightest change of personnel in a band that has those magical qualities even if the change is not the main person in the band ( singer/ songwriter ) can have a BIG effect that usually results in the loss of the magic. bands like CCR. AC/DC, The Stones, The Who, even the KinKs come to mind relating to this subject - some bands can still hold on to all or some of the magic thru personnel changes like the KinKs, and Ramones are 2 off the bat I can think of. and rarely if ever when one person breaks off from a magical band does the solo output top the band output, some come very close like Ray Davies and John Lennon but most become a shadow or empty shell of what use to be like Jefferson Starship from the airplane, that is one of the worst case scenarios and so is AC/DC. Sting is another...the list goes on.
