On this 22nd Day of Black History Month, the Black Success Network pays tribute to Coach Tony Dungy, who was born in Jackson, Michigan. Tony Dungy is a former professional football player and retired NFL coach - one of the most respected and popular NFL coaches in the league.. After playing quarterback at the University of Minnesota, Tony Dungy went on to play safety for the Pittsburg Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers. He started his coaching career in 1980 as a defensive back coach at the University of Minnesota. At the age of 25, in 1981, he became assistant coach for the Steelers and was later promoted to defensive coordinator. Coach Dungy was the defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1989-91 and defensive coordinator coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 1992-95, where his defense was ranked first in the NFL. In 1996, Coach Dungy was named head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite the fact that he developed a team that had not been very successful and led the team to the playoffs year after year, he was released in 2001 after repeated losses in the playoffs. The next year, the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. In January 2002, Dungy became head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. During his seven years leading the Colts, he became the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl (2007). In January 2009, he announced his retirement from the Colts, ending a highly successful coaching career.
