On this date in 1981, Lena Horne opened on Broadway in her one-woman show. I walked in her show a 25-year-old youngster but walked out a wize old man in lots of ways, certainly one who knew he had witnessed greatness. Lena filled that theatre with grit and grace during that now legendary run. She packed a whole lifetime of experience in that show and it is still one of the most extraordinary nights Ive ever spent in the theatre. I still listen to the recording of the performance on my iPod when Im down and in need of some inspiration. Every life should have a Horne section.
