On this date in MUSIC History ... Nov. 17: In 1970, up and coming pianist/singer/songwriter Elton John and his bandmates, Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsson on drums, played a radio concert from WABC studios in NYC. Unbeknownst to Elton and the band, an 8-track audio recording was made from the show and it was later released on vinyl to combat the massive amount of bootlegs turning up in record shops. At the time, Elton was, at least on record, another brooding singer-songwriter, but live his shows were decidedly more rock n roll. The album, mixed by no less than studio ace Phil Ramone and simply titled 11-17-70, turned out to be the only legitimately released snapshot of what he sounded like in concert in the years before guitarist Davey Johnstone joined the bands lineup.
