On this day, eight years ago, the fire service suffered an irreplaceable loss. Lieutenant Peter B. Lund, retired from the Fire Department City of New York, past Chief of the Woodmere Volunteer Fire Department (LI, NY) and active "Ladderman" of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department succumb to his injuries after operating at a working structural fire in Long Island, NY. This tragedy sent a shock wave through our fire service family. It has been 2,923 days since Pete was taken from us. He is remembered each and everyday by the members of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department and everyone in the fire service that had the privilege to meet him. What he stood for is also passed on each and everyday. He was so influential that most training programs you see today, usually speak about the values and tactics he passed on during his tenure. When the younger generation entering the fire service asks "who should I be like?", "who should I emulate?", "what path should I take?" and "what mindset/attitude should I have/display?".... I would have to tell them to "be yourself, but be the firefighter that Lieutenant Lund would WANT to have on his crew." ***On a side note, Pete (Lt. Vulcan) was well known for attracting working fires whenever he was on a piece of fire apparatus. The photo of Pete and I eating dinner was taken on December 21st, 2001 at 19:39 hours. Pete had just made Chicken Cordon Bleu for dinner. The other photo was taken on the same date, 29 minutes later! We operated on this second alarm (first due) apartment fire. With fire from two-floors on arrival and people reported trapped.
